Squirrel Tail – Natural Tapered Hair for Precision Fly Tying
Squirrel Tail is a classic, highly versatile natural material prized by professional fly tyers for its fine taper, soft movement, and subtle translucence in the water. With fibers that are naturally slender and mobile, squirrel tail excels where controlled action and refined profiles matter more than bulk or stiffness.
This material bridges the gap between bucktail and softer furs, making it an excellent choice for tyers who design flies with intentional movement and clean proportions. 🪶
Why Would Fly Tyers Love This Product?
- Naturally fine, tapered fibers ideal for slim, precise profiles
- Soft movement that comes alive with minimal current or retrieve
- Easier to control and stack than many coarse natural hairs
- Excellent for blending with synthetic fibers or bucktail in layered designs
- A trusted natural material for tyers who value subtle action and realism
Squirrel tail allows experienced tyers to fine-tune motion without overpowering the fly—perfect for patterns where restraint is part of the design.
What Flies Is It Ideal For? 🎯
- Streamer wings and underwings
- Salmon and steelhead flies
- Hairwing trout streamers
- Soft baitfish imitations
- Accent material in layered streamer construction
A Material for Thoughtful Fly Design
For fly tyers who appreciate natural movement, controlled profiles, and material versatility, squirrel tail remains a dependable choice at the bench. Whether used on its own or layered with other materials, it adds a refined touch that experienced tyers recognize immediately.
Some considerations when tying with this material:
1. Use a strong thread to allow for cosntant applied pressure. I like a more rounded profile thread like veevus or uni when tying in squirrel tail hair
2. Wax your thread with a quality tyers wax like that from veniards or semperfli
3. Separate the hair as you tie in especially in larger patterns where more hair is used
4. Hold the hair while trimming the head (if trimmed after tie in) to ensure no slippage or rotating of the hair around the shank
5. Taper the head and lay a smooth layer of thread especailly if tying in a collar afterwards such as with the Cosseboom pattern style
6. I have also used brush-on zap applied to the thread before tying in to ensure a bullet proof tie. (Caution: use zap sparingly to avoid it running into your bobbin contributing to some choice words being uttered
Patterns commonly used:
Salmon Wets like the Blue Charm and Cosseboom Series of flies, Streamer flies, Stonefly Patterns

IF INTERESTED IN ORDERING FLIES?
It has become very difficult to keep a good stock of quality flies as I tie many of the patterns myself especially the custom streamers. If you are interested in ordering flies and do not see stock available please forward me a list of what you would like in the chat, by email, or Facebook message. I will provide you a quote and delivery date and only accept payment when the flies are ready to ship. Please note that It will be very unlikely that I will be able to provide custom flies during the summer months (between June-August)
